The War Machine armor is derived from Tony Stark's birthday party when Rhodes utilizes the Mark II suit of armor to curtail Iron Man's drunken antics. Succeeding in fighting Stark to a standstill, Rhodes commandeers the Mark II armor and makes the suit accessible to the overeager military. The armor is subsequently weaponized to capacity with hardware provided by Justin Hammer. Later, Hammer's new employee, the disgruntled Ivan Vanko, establishes remote control of War Machine's weaponry along with the drone units salvaged from Hammer's array of mech suits. When Vanko finally stages his mass attack, Rhodes is initially unable to prevent the War Machine armor from attacking Iron Man, although he finally gains control and assists Iron Man in battling the remaining drones as well as the armor-clad Vanko himself.
